When ODU Pushes VT Around, Something’s Gone Wrong

Hokies lose BIG to a program that didn't even exist a few years ago.

There was a time when the thought of Virginia Tech losing to Old Dominion would’ve sounded like a bad joke. Yet here we are. Saturday wasn’t just a rough game — it felt like a gut punch.

ODU’s program is barely old enough to buy a beer, but they walked into Lane and made Tech look like the start-up. Every drive turned into a headache: busted protections, dumb penalties, and turnovers that felt almost scripted. It wasn’t just sloppy football, it was uninspired.

The part that really burns? ODU’s roster is built with Virginia kids. Ten, fifteen years ago, those same players would’ve been wearing maroon and orange. Now they’re putting on Monarch blue and running circles around us in our own house.

You can blame coaching, execution, or just a bad day, but the bigger picture is hard to ignore. Recruiting has slipped, energy has drained out of Lane, and the edge that made Tech dangerous is gone. ODU didn’t just beat us. They exposed us.

Losing to a rival hurts. Losing to a neighbor hurts worse. But losing to a program that didn’t even exist when Beamer was building a powerhouse? That’s a whole new low. And unless something changes, this won’t be the last time Virginia talent lines up across from Tech and shows them what they could’ve had.
